Analysis Of The Broken Heart By John Donne - 1001 Words
Juan Linares Mr. Maust English IV AP 17 November 2015 Imagery in ââ¬Å"The Broken Heartâ⬠by John Donne Perhaps the most beautiful thing about humans is that emotions and thought seem to go hand in hand. One either distances or comforts the other. When together, these two things can create a mirror into human nature, or shatter what people see in themselves for another. The stability of the heart is something precarious and not fully understood, but it is through works as ââ¬Å"The Broken Heartâ⬠by John Donne that we can see this stability; understanding it and seeing it in ourselves for what it truly is. Works like Donneââ¬â¢s poem use varied imagery to put into words many of the feelings people experience when in Love; feelings often shunned or ignored because they baffle any who try and understand them. But his clear words, each giving a stage for Loveââ¬â¢s form and character, clarify these sentiments; and in that way, the words convey Donneââ¬â¢s own attitude towards the nature of Love, and our nature to Love. Love begins faster than the spark of gunpowder, yet leaves with a glacial pace. Done begins his poem explaining the commencement of Love. He refers to Love as a ââ¬Å"Plagueâ⬠that has plighted him for a year. No plague can last a year afflicting someone, but Donne seems to make Love as this viral disease. Easy to contract yet difficult to cure. He then ends his first stanza saying that he ââ¬Å"saw a flash of powder burn a dayâ⬠(line 8) referring to Loveââ¬â¢s time devouring ability.
